How do we evaluate knowledge? Nicolás Trujillo joins discussion on science and academic production

Nicolás Trujillo
Nicolás Trujillo Osorio, joined Radio USACH’s La Sociedad de la Ciencia for a discussion on how knowledge production is evaluated in Chile and the consequences of current assessment criteria for the arts, humanities and social sciences.

Broadcast on October 21st, the programme addressed two closely connected debates: Chile’s 2027 science budget and the ways universities and research systems recognise and evaluate academic production.

Trujillo, a researcher at CECTS whose work focuses on philosophy of science and science, technology and innovation policyjoined Felipe Cussenfrom Universidad de Santiago’s Institute for Advanced Studies for the segment “The dictatorship of the paper: evaluating the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences”.

The conversation examined the predominance of scientific papers as indicators of academic productivity and the difficulties that arise when a single evaluation model is applied to very different forms of knowledge production. It also addressed the need for assessment criteria capable of recognising diverse research and creative practices, as well as funding instruments suited to this diversity.

Trujillo’s participation speaks to a central question in science and technology studies: how do policies, indicators and evaluation instruments help determine which forms of knowledge are recognised, funded and valued?
